Learn how to install the Viento diffuser overlay on your Tesla Model S with our step-by-step guide, including fitment notes and common mistakes to avoid.
Quick Answer
Install the Viento diffuser overlay by cleaning the surface, test-fitting the pieces, applying adhesive promoter, and pressing each panel firmly into place. Follow the specific order below to avoid misalignment and ensure a secure bond.
Why Fitment Matters
The Viento diffuser overlay is designed for the 2022–2025 Tesla Model S (Long Range & Plaid) and the 2026+ Model S Long Range. It does not fit the 2026+ Model S Plaid, so double-check your vehicle year and trim before starting.
Because the diffuser is made from dry molded 2x2 twill carbon fiber, it is lightweight but rigid. This means it will not flex much during installation, so the mounting surface must be clean and the tape must be applied evenly.
Tools and Prep
You will need isopropyl alcohol, a microfiber cloth, adhesive promoter (if included), and a heat gun or hair dryer. Warm the adhesive tape if the ambient temperature is below 60°F (15°C) to improve bonding.
Park on a flat surface and allow the car to cool if it has been driven recently. The bumper area should be dry and free of wax or polish.
Installation Steps
- Clean the mounting surface: Wipe the area where the diffuser will attach with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Remove all dirt, wax, and residue. Let it dry completely. Checkpoint: If the surface is not spotless, the adhesive may not bond properly.
- Test-fit the pieces: Place the three pieces (left, right, and center) over the stock diffuser without removing the backing tape. Align the edges and mark the position with painter's tape. Checkpoint: Ensure the flanges align with the body lines before committing to adhesive.
- Apply adhesive promoter: Apply the included promoter to the back of the carbon fiber pieces and the corresponding area on the car. Wait the recommended time (usually 1-2 minutes) until it becomes tacky. Checkpoint: Do not touch the promoter surface after application.
- Warm the adhesive tape: If the temperature is cool, use a heat gun or hair dryer on low to warm the tape on the back of the diffuser. This makes the tape more pliable and improves initial adhesion. Checkpoint: Keep the heat gun moving to avoid overheating the carbon fiber.
- Press the center piece first: Remove the backing tape from the center piece and press it firmly onto the marked position. Apply even pressure for 30-60 seconds, working from the center outward. Checkpoint: Misalignment here will affect the side pieces, so take your time.
- Install the side flanges: Repeat the process for the left and right flanges, aligning them with the center piece and the existing body lines. Press firmly and hold. Checkpoint: Check the gaps between the flanges and the center piece; they should be even.
- Final pressure and curing: Go over all pieces again, pressing along the edges to ensure full contact. Avoid washing the car or driving at high speeds for at least 24 hours to allow the adhesive to cure. Checkpoint: After 24 hours, inspect the edges for any lifting.
